Brushing

For children under the age of three, our pediatric dentists recommend that parents use water and a kid’s toothbrush to clean their children’s teeth. By the third birthday, parents should begin supervising brushing to ensure their children don’t swallow toothpaste. It’s also important to make sure young children don’t use more than a pea-size amount of fluoride toothpaste on a soft-bristled toothbrush.

We recommend that children brush their teeth after every meal and before bedtime. It’s important to remind your children to rinse out their mouths after brushing.

Proper Brushing Technique

Children should be taught how to properly brush their teeth. Just follow this guide.

  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush with a small dab of fluoride toothpaste. Hold the brush at a 45-degree angle and brush in small, circular motions to reach under the gum line.
  • Brush the chewing surfaces of the teeth, the back teeth and in between teeth.
  • Continue using small, circular motions to brush the inside of the upper and lower teeth.
  • Brush the inside of the top and bottom front teeth by positioning the head of the toothbrush up-and-down, using small circular motions.
  • Brush the tongue and roof of the mouth and finish up by rinsing out the mouth.

Flossing

We encourage daily flossing to prevent a buildup of food particles and plaque in areas between the teeth. At first, flossing may cause the gums to bleed; however, the bleeding should subside after a few times. If your child’s gums continue to bleed, please contact our office.

Flossing may be a bit challenging at first, but it gets easier with practice.

  • Pull a small length of floss from the dispenser.
  • Wrap the ends around your middle fingers.
  • Guide the floss between all the teeth to the gum line.
  • Unwrap clean floss from your fingers and continue on until you’ve used all the floss.
  • Be sure to floss behind the back teeth.

Diet Control

To promote strong teeth and healthy gums, parents should minimize their children’s consumption of starch and sugar. Providing children with a well-balanced diet with foods from all the main food groups can go far in avoiding dental problems and in keeping the teeth and gums healthy.

  • Foods to limit: Cookies, candy, chips and crackers.
  • Healthy Foods to Offer: Vegetables and fruits, low-fat yogurt, and cheese.

Dental Visits

Make it a point to bring your child to our Stuart pediatric dentist office twice a year for checkups. By scheduling regular checkups and professional cleanings, your child can avoid many dental problems and maintain a healthy and attractive smile! During a routine check-up appointment, one of our dentists will conduct a thorough examination followed by a discussion of her findings and recommended treatment. If your child experiences a dental emergency, call our office immediately.

Sealants

We provide tooth sealants at our pediatric dentist office to help children avoid cavities. The sealants we use are made of a resin material and work by seeping into the grooves that form on the chewing surfaces of back teeth where bacteria and food debris gather. While sealants can last for several years, they need to be checked during routine appointments.
