What are Dental Sealants?

At our Stuart, FL pediatric dentistry office, we offer dental treatments that children need to achieve and maintain their most incredible smiles! When it comes to helping your child avoid tooth decay, which is the most common dental problem children face, we stress the importance of good oral hygiene, eating a proper diet and visiting Dr. Torres and Dr. Sugar regularly for routine examinations. But there’s more that can be done to prevent tooth decay from affecting your child’s teeth! We can apply dental sealants to the chewing surfaces of your child’s back teeth to protect them from decay.

What Sealants Are and How They Work

Dental-SealantsDental sealants are protective barriers that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth or molars as they’re also called. These sealants, which are made of a resin material, protect these cavity-prone teeth by sealing all the grooves and pits that are on the surfaces of the teeth.

It’s not easy for children to brush their back teeth well enough to clean away all the tiny bits of food and bacteria that become trapped in these small crevices. When sealants are applied, all the harmful acid that’s formed from a combination of food particles and bacteria cannot get into all these little grooves and pits on the teeth.

It only takes a few minutes for us to apply dental sealants to your child’s teeth. Once the sealants are on, they will last for several years. Every time your child visits us for routine checkups and cleanings, we’ll check the condition of the sealants to make sure they’re still doing their job!
