At Children's Dentistry of Stuart, we're proud to offer comprehensive pediatric dental care to kids throughout the greater Stuart, FL area. But achieving a healthy smile requires more than just in-office pediatric dental treatment, and maintaining a diligent routine of brushing at home is vital. Parents often ask us about the proper brushing techniques and the right amount of toothpaste to use for kids so, we'd like to shed a little light on the subject.

How Much Toothpaste Should My Child Use?

Toothpaste is an important ingredient to a healthy brushing routine, but when it comes to oral hygiene, there can be too much of a good thing. With children, especially, using too much toothpaste can be problematic, as children's toothpaste is often sweet and kids frequently swallow too much of it. But they'll still need to use toothpaste – so how much is too much?

Thankfully, the answer here is simple. If your child is less than 3 years old, you should use only a small smear of toothpaste – just enough to cover the bristles. If they're older than 3 years, you can graduate to a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. That's it!
