At Children’s Dentistry of Stuart, Dr. Nancy Torres and Dr. Julie Sugar offer a wide range of quality, pediatric dentistry treatments to children of all ages living in the Stuart and Palm City, FL areas. We understand that visiting the dentist is not a fun or pleasant experience for all children as some kids feel very nervous and anxious about seeing a dentist. We also know that some children are simply not able to sit still long enough in the dental chair to receive the dental treatment they need.

For these reasons, we proudly offer sedation dentistry in the  Palm City, FL area that involves the use of sedatives to help children relax during their dental visits. Sedation dentistry is endorsed by our friends at the American Dental Association (ADA) as a safe and effective way to make kids relax and feel comfortable while they receive the dental care they need.

Who Makes a Good Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?

We understand that it can be tough to determine if your child needs sedation dentistry. That’s why we’ve put together the information below! Your child may be a good candidate for sedation dentistry if he or she:

  • Is very apprehensive and fearful of visiting the dentist
  • Is fidgety and unable to sit still
  • Needs to have several dental procedures done at the same time
  • Is unable to cooperate or follow directions
  • Has uncontrollable body movements

The Types of Sedation We Use

Our pediatric dentists use two types of sedation dentistry:

  • Oral Conscious Sedation: This involves your child taking a sedative by mouth that will calm him or her down during the dental visit. Your child will feel sleepy during the procedure but still able to speak and respond to the dentist. Oral conscious sedation is most often used for children who are highly anxious and fearful, those with special needs, and for kids who need several dental treatments done at the same time.
  • Nitrous Oxide: Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is administered via a mask that’s placed over your child’s nose. Once the gas takes effect, your child will feel calm and relaxed. He or she will be able to speak and respond to the dentist. Nitrous oxide is most often used for children who are mildly or moderately anxious or nervous. It eases their fears so they can relax and receive the dental care they need in a comfortable and safe manner.

During your visit to our office, we’ll help you decide which type of sedation is best for your child, based on his or her individual needs.
